Advanced Subjects

There are some things that eventually you may need to learn that are not covered in this knowledge base because they are out of scope. Such subjects may be touched on here. Some subjects are in a gray area between "in-scope" knowledge (which we fully support in our knowledge base) and "out of scope" knowledge which we don't support. Some of these gray areas will be briefly covered here, in other cases we will recommend you search the web for your answers.

Deleting Files From Your Web Site

Web sites are organic. Your web site should change as you change. Imagine you had a picture of your cat on your web site and you have moved and left your cat with a friend. And let's further suppose you got a dog in your new home and want to put his picture on your web site. Using Komposer, you remove the picture of your cat, add the picture of your dog and change a bit of text. You publish your new page and all is working well. Komposer has put the photo of your dog on your web site and has put a new version of your page and all is well. But what Komposer did not do was to remove the picture of your cat from the Yen 9 server.

For this you need an FTP client and we recommend FileZilla. You can download it at: http://filezilla-project.org/download.php?type=client

Open FileZilla by double clicking on it.

Then click on File | Site Manager.

Click on "New Site" and give your site a label - something like My Yen 9 Site.

Using the information that was sent to you when you registered with Yen 9, fill out the fields on the "General" tab. It should look something like this when you are done:

Then click on the Transfer settings tab. Under the words "Transfer mode:" Click on the radio button that says "Passive". It should look something like this:

Click on OK.

Now click on File | Site Manager, select your site and click on connect.

After FileZilla connects to your web site, you should see a list of all the files that are there. To delete a file you no longer need, highlight the file by clicking once on it and then press the delete key.

With an FTP client (like FileZilla) you can also drag and drop files from your computer to your web site. This has the same effect as "publishing" in Komposer or in Thingamablog.

What about PHP, Ruby on Rails, JavaScript and Other Server-Side and Client-Side Scripts?

If you understand how to use it, you may use JavaScripts in your web pages, but it is out of the scope of our support through the knowledge base to try to help you with using Javascript. "Serve-side" scripting is not allowed on the Yen 9 sub domain servers. If you have a need for this please contact us and we will recomend a solution to you.
